Gladwell argues for the free market. He sees happiness in terms of our demonstrated preferences. We can get what we want at no extra cost. This is the traditional definition of increasing wealth: more choices for our money.

Gladwell talks about a man no one has heard of. The man has re-shaped the retail food industry. He thinks we are happier.
